GEM

ChatGPT Ads is live in Spain: GEM officially begins

Blog · B2B Performance & Analytics

In late August 2026, OpenAI activated ChatGPT Ads in Spain, as part of an expansion to roughly 31 European markets. With self-service now open for Spanish companies since August 31, this stops being a future forecast: it is the real starting point of GEM (Generative Engine Marketing), the paid layer inside AI answers. What we had been preparing for as a concept is now a channel you can actually buy.

The full timeline, no filler

The rollout was not a single announcement but several phases in sequence. The first ads were served in the United States in February 2026, to adult users on the free and Go plans. In May 2026, the self-service Ads Manager opened for US companies. The jump to Europe came in August 2026, with Spain among the first 31 markets included, and the first ads showing to Spanish users from August 24 and 25 of that same month. Self-service for Spanish companies opened barely a week later, on August 31.

How the ads actually work

Ads appear in a separate, clearly labeled card below ChatGPT's answer, never mixed inside the text the AI itself generates. OpenAI defends this as a design principle: the generative answer and the ad remain visually distinct at all times. They also do not show up in every conversation: they appear only when the system detects genuine commercial intent, which happens in roughly 20% of conversations. Paid plan users (Plus, Pro, Team, Business, Enterprise) still see no ads at all, only logged-in users on the free and Go plans do. In the European Economic Area, ad personalization also starts out limited, in line with data protection requirements.

"Whoever gets in first builds up learning about which formats, messages and targeting work best, before the channel fills up with competition."

Why the timing matters: almost no one is in yet

The real advantage of this moment is not theoretical. With the channel just opened in Spain, competition among advertisers is still very low, which typically translates into lower cost per click or impression than what will be seen a few months from now, once the channel matures. One agency already running campaigns since day one reports a 0.86% CTR in its first 24 hours, a figure worth reading with caution given how early it is, but one that confirms the channel is already generating real engagement, not just hype.

What buying models are available

Buying can be done through CPC, CPM, or optimized cost per conversion, and there is no mandatory minimum spend to operate in self-service, unlike the minimum investment requirements that existed in the early phases of the program in the United States. This opens the door for mid-sized companies, not just large advertisers, to test the channel without committing a large budget from day one.

What this means for your strategy

This launch confirms exactly the distinction we already defended between GEO and GEM: GEO is the citation you earn for free, showing up as an organic reference in AI answers; GEM is the position you can now pay for, the same way SEM was always the paid counterpart to SEO. The difference is that, until August 2026, GEM was a reasonable forecast about where the market was heading. Now it is a real investment decision, with an early entry window that will close as soon as the channel fills up with advertisers, just as has always happened with any new advertising platform.
